Did you miss today’s episode? Musical Artists Zakiyah and Stephen Martyr were on Heart to Heart!

Well here is a little recap.

Singer/Songwriter Zakiyah was on the show today. She has been involved in music industry for 30 years. Originally from Salem, Va , she always wanted to sing. In the beginning of her singing career the genre of her music was Folk and Rock music. Although she performed to large crowds, she noticed that the African-American community did not take to her music. Zakiyah loves all types of music. Although she wanted to stay true to herself, she wanted to be able to appeal to a larger audience. So she rearranged her singing style and now her music is a mixture of Neo-soul, Jazz, and Funk. Zakiyah stayed true to herself and her music.

Zakiyah has performed in Japan and in the UK. Later in her career she hit a road block, and she stopped singing. So she went and got a normal job and worked a Duke University. In 2005, at Norfolk State University Homecoming, her daughter realized that she was unhappy and told her mother that her soul was dead because she wasn’t doing what she loved. She didn’t have a lot of money to try to support her music again, and she was living off of her royalty checks from Japan and the UK. An investor soon approached her and asked how much money would it take to help her to do music again. So the investor help her with the finances she needed to try to persue her music again.

Zakiyah gave an excellent performance on the show today to give us a taste of her musical flair.

Stephen Martyr also stopped by the studio today and the viewer’s heard his story. He is a student at Norfolk State Univeristy and he is studying Music Media. While at school has participated in the concert choir.

Martyr has been singing since he was 2 year’s old and he used to follow his mom around while she sung. As time went on he found his own musical style. He is a gospel singer and his music is greatly influenced by God. He has a band and background singer’s that perfom’s with him on many of his engagements. He gave our viewer’s a taste of his music by singing one his orginal songs.
